5月10－13日に来日した国連人口基金事務局長トラヤ・A・オベイドは、秋篠宮同妃両殿下に謁見し、開発に関する重要課題（特に女性の健康、安全な出産、また若者に対するヘルス・サービスや情報の提供などのリプロダクテｲブ・ヘルスに関する課題）について詳しくご説明申し上げた。
　有森裕子国連人口基金親善大使は、これまで視察に訪れたカンボジアのHIV/エイズ、エチオピアのフィスチュラの状況についてご報告申し上げた。
　常日頃、開発途上国の母子保健や女性の健康問題に対して深い関心をお寄せになられていらっしゃる秋篠宮同妃両殿下は、二人の報告に耳を傾けられた。

Ms Obaid, UNFPA Executive Director, paid a courtesy call to their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino, and explained the development issues, especially in relation to reproductive health, ie, saving women's lives, ensuring safe delivery and providing necessary health information/services to young people. Ms Yuko Arimori, GWA, touched HIV/AIDS situation in Cambodia and Fistula in Ethiopia based on her experience as GWA. Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino, who have always been concerned about maternal and child health issues in the world, listened to their information and explanations.
